Esther Megargel, Composer

Esther L. Megargel (b.1942) received her early music training in the California Bay Area, where she studied both piano and violin. She has a BS in Music Education from Western Oregon University (1975), BM in Composition from the University of Oregon (2008), and is currently working on an MM in Composition from Brigham Young University.  Her teachers have included A. Laurence Lyon, Robert Kyr, David Crumb, Steven Ricks, and Michael Hicks.

She taught music in Oregon public schools for several years before settling on a career as independent piano teacher and composer. She has won composition awards from Mu Phi Epsilon, the LDS Church, and Oregon Music Teacher’s Association. She was commissioned as Composer of the Year by OMTA in 2009. In 2012 she was a recipient of the Vera Hinckley Mayhew award in composition.

Her works have been performed by church choirs, children’s choirs, numerous young pianists and various chamber ensembles in Oregon and Utah. She is currently published by Modern Music Methods.  She and her husband Monty reside in Utah and have three children and eight grandchildren. Her hobbies include family history, reading the classics, and hiking.
