Esther L Megargel (1942-) received her early music training in the California Bay Area where she studied both piano and violin. She has undergraduate degrees in Music Education from Western University (1975) and in Composition from the University of Oregon (2008). She has a Master's degree in Composition from Brigham Young University (2013). Her teachers have included A. Laurence Lyon, Robert Kyr, David Crumb, Michael Hicks, and Steven Ricks. She was music specialist in Oregon public schools prior to settling on a career as independent piano teacher and composer. She has received composition awards from Mu Phi Epsilon, the LDS Church, and Oregon Music Teacher's Association. She was commissioned as Composer of the Year by OMTA in 2009. In 2012 she was a recipient of BYU's Vera Hinckley Mayhew Award. Her works have been performed by church choirs, children's choirs, numerous young pianists and various chamber ensembles in Oregon and Utah. She and her husband Monty reside in Utah and have three children and eight grandchildren.
